Santiago has entered into the pre-testing phase. He needs to show he can independently alert without feedback from the trainer. We are also adding the phrase “Let’s check”, which lets the dog know that we need to verify their alert before they can be rewarded.

Starting to work with Santiago on finding the target odor on a person in all different scenarios. Today we worked outside for the first time, first on the curb then at the bench. One thing we really work on before making the game too hard is persistent behavior at the target odor–making sure that the dog completely understands what they’re supposed to be doing, and to continue to alert when they notice the odor until it goes away.
