Maverick’s Updates

Training Status Update: 12/25/23

NICST is excited to announce the placement of FRK9 Maverick with the Santa City of Santa Rosa Fire Department!! Maverick was given to NICST by Guide Dogs of America – Tender Loving Canines as a puppy.

Maverick was trained by the National Institute of Canine Science and Training – First Response K-9 Agency Dog Program. The Program is designed to help improve the psychological well-being of first responders by providing staff with an outlet from mental, physical, or psychological effects of cumulative and short-term trauma. Dogs are provided to agencies at no charge. The Santa Rosa Fire Foundation generously provided the funding for training of the handlers and all other related costs.

Maverick completed his training with NICST and was placed with Santa Rosa Fire Department’s Behavioral Health Program. “Maverick” was placed on Nov. 20, 2023, and is teamed up with Fire Captain Cori Rickert

Maverick is working his way through final testing.

Maverick has worked his way up to four decoys.

Maverick has been introduced to the target odor. He’s not sure what to think of the odor yet, but he sure enjoys getting a lot of food for doing it.

Maverick has finished his puppy raising in our Paws On A Mission Program and is now if formal training.

We welcome Maverick into scent training. He will receive two weeks of foundation nose work learning the food find it game and being imprinted to the target odor.

We will be welcoming Maverick into formal training soon. He is maintaining all his foundation skills and task training
